چکیده

We present a system that generates multimodal route descriptions for computer assisted vehicle navigation.1 The presentation modes available in Vitra Guide are natural language, maps and perspective views. Depending on situationspecific constraints, e.g., fully specifed route descriptions for pre-trip planning or incremental route descriptions during driving, Vitra Guide allows the coordinated distribution of the route information over the available presentation modes. The coordinated use of the presentation modes is achieved by a plan-based approach. The output for all presentation modes relies on one common 3-dimensional geometric model of the domain. This paper appeared in: Proc. of the Sixth Int. Conf. on Industrial and Engineering Applications of Artificial Intelligence and Expert Systems IEA/AIE-93, pp. 144–147, Edinburgh, Scotland, 1993. 1The work described here has been supported by the German Science Foundation (DFG) in its Special Collaborative Research Programme on Artificial Intelligence and Knowledge Based Systems (SFB 314), project N2: Vitra.

A Collaborative Route Information Sharing System for Visually Impaired Travelers

Limited sensory information about a new environment often requires people with a visual impairment to rely on sighted guides for showing or describing routes around the environment. However, route descriptions provided by other blind independent navigators, (e.g., over a cell phone), can also be used to guide a traveler along a previously unknown route. A visually impaired guide can often descr...

A Corpus of Natural Multimodal Spatial Scene Descriptions

We present a corpus of multimodal spatial descriptions, as commonly occurring in route giving tasks. Participants provided natural spatial scene descriptions with speech and abstract deictic/iconic hand gestures. The scenes were composed of simple geometric objects. While the language denotes object shape and visual properties (e.g., colour), the abstract deictic gestures “placed” objects in ge...

Stories as Route Descriptions

While navigation instructions in terms of turn instructions and distances are suitable for guiding drivers on roads, a different context of use like pedestrian navigation requires extended routing data and algorithms as well as adapted presentation forms to be effective. In our work we study alternative forms of navigation instructions for pedestrians in city environments. In this paper we expl...

Semantics-based User Tracking and Dynamic Re-Planning for a Contextual Guide

Research activity in the field of assisted human navigation during the past few years has been increasing drastically. There exist, and will appear even more, areas where electronically assisted navigation is becoming an important part of Ubiquitous System solution. Already, electronic navigation devices have strongly influenced the procedure of human wayfinding, especially with the aid of GPS ...

Modality Fusion in a Route Navigation System

In this paper we present the MUMS Multimodal Route Navigation System which combines speech, pen, and graphics into a PDA-based multimodal system. We focus especially on the three-level modality fusion component which we believe provides an accurate and more flexible input fusion than the usual twolevel approaches. The modular architecture of the system supports flexible component management, an...
